The actual sequence for Ikorodu:
Dabiri-Erewa* held the Ikorodu seat for *12 years* — from 2003 to 2015. She left in 2015 when she was appointed SSA to the President on Diaspora Affairs, later becoming Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM.
*Babajimi Benson* took over in *2015* and is currently serving his *third term*. He was first elected in 2015, re-elected in 2019, and again in 2023. If he runs and wins in 2027, that would be a *fourth term*, taking him to 16 consecutive years.
So it’s *27 years total* so far between the two of them, 12 years for Abike [2003-2015] + 12 years for Jimi so far [2015-2027 if he completes this term].
*Ikorodu needs democratic rotation:*
In a system with regular turnover, you’d expect 3 different representatives over a 24-27 year span, with a 4th person coming in now. The concern being raised locally is exactly that — youth groups and community leaders are arguing that 16 years shuts out new entrants and limits broader participation. Supporters counter that his track record on infrastructure, education, and empowerment justifies continuity.
*Why this is a recurring debate in Ikorodu:*
Nigeria has no constitutional term limit for lawmakers at the federal level. So it comes down to party primaries and voter choice. When one person dominates for decades, it often reflects both party structure and the challenge of mounting a competitive challenge against an incumbent with established networks and constituency projects.
Ikorodu should adopt an informal zoning/rotation agreement among stakeholders, if we truly love ikorodu and want ikorodu to move forward.

We need to have a core agreement in political *representation rotation* in Ikorodu if we want Ikorodu to move forward.
: if Abike Dabiri held the position for 12 years and Jimi Benson has also held it for 12 years and is seeking an extension, that’s 24 years with just two individuals in the role. In a healthier democratic setup with regular turnover, you’d expect roughly three different individuals to have occupied that seat by now, with a fourth person next in line.
*Why this matters:*
- *Term rotation* creates room for new ideas, fresh perspectives, and broader representation across different groups in the constituency. When the same individual stays for decades, it can concentrate influence and limit opportunities for other qualified candidates.
- *Democratic health* is often measured by how open the process is to change. Longer incumbencies aren’t automatically bad if the person is effective and has public support, but they do raise questions about competition, internal party succession, and whether voters have real alternatives.
- *Institutional memory vs. stagnation* is the trade-off. 24 years means deep experience and networks, but it can also mean resistance to new approaches if there’s no built-in mechanism for succession.
The tension here is between *continuity* and *renewal*. If the system relied more on structured term limits or competitive primaries, you’d likely see the turnover you described.

AN URGENT CALL FOR RESTRAINT, JUSTICE, AND DEMOCRATIC ORDER IN IKORODU
It has become imperative to address a disturbing pattern that has continued unchecked in recent weeks, the deliberate destruction of campaign materials belonging to Hon. Abdulkareem Olugbenga Shittu.
This is not merely about banners. It is about the growing attempt to silence participation, suppress support, and undermine the fundamental rights of individuals to freely associate and express their political choices. These actions, coupled with reported intimidation of supporters and obstruction from engaging established party structures in places like Ijede and Igbogbo, raise serious concerns about the state of internal democracy within our constituency.
Despite these provocations, we have exercised restraint. We have chosen the path of peace, guided by the firm belief that no human effort can overturn what God has ordained. However, continued silence in the face of injustice must not be mistaken for acceptance.
One is compelled to ask: if there is genuine confidence in popularity, performance, and acceptance by the people, why resort to actions that suggest fear of open and fair engagement? Why attempt to weaken opposition through suppression rather than strength of record and credibility?
Every resource used in this struggle has come from legitimate means, built on hard work and personal sacrifice, not from public funds. The destruction of these materials is not only an attack on an individual but a direct affront to fairness, equity, and the democratic process itself.
We therefore call on party leaders, community heads, and all relevant authorities in Ikorodu to rise to this moment and address these actions decisively. If left unchecked, such conduct carries the risk of escalating tensions and disrupting the peace we all value.
Ikorodu must not descend into a space where intimidation replaces dialogue, and coercion replaces choice. The will of the people must prevail, freely, fairly, and without fear.

STATEMENT ON SUSTAINED ATTACKS ON DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION IN IKORODU
Recent events in Ikorodu have gone beyond ordinary political rivalry and now raise serious questions about the integrity of our democratic space.
For weeks, campaign materials belonging to Hon. Abdulkareem Olugbenga Shittu have been deliberately destroyed. Supporters have reportedly faced intimidation, and legitimate political engagement within recognized party structures in areas such as Ijede and Igbogbo has been obstructed.
These are not isolated incidents. They reflect a troubling pattern.
Those who project strength, performance, and widespread acceptance should have no reason to fear open participation. When actions consistently point toward suppression, harassment, and restriction, it sends a different message entirely, one of unease with fair competition.
Let it be stated without ambiguity:
No act of intimidation or destruction will alter the will of the people or the outcome that God has ordained.
We have remained restrained and law-abiding, despite repeated provocation. However, continued interference with constitutionally guaranteed rights, freedom of expression, association, and political participation, cannot and should not be normalized.

Congratulations to Ikorodu indigenes and the aliens for having charismatic, visionary, honest, diplomatic, influential, intelligent and a pragmatic politician of caliber of Honourable Shittu vying for the position of the House of representative of federal Republic of Nigeria representing the good people of Ikorodu both home and abroad, this is a very bold step to move Ikorodu from where it is to the next level. Honourable Shittu happens to be a God fearing person with a plain heart and he's an all inclusive person, never be a discriminative being in all his affairs, pushing him forward means there is light at the end of the tunnel cos giving him a chance will bring him closer to us and makes us to belief that we haven't made a wrong choice.
